Support Coastal Preservation In Gulf Coast States

Project Overview
Operation 111 was an initiative launched in 2013 to promote conservation and restoration of natural habitats and waters, within the five Gulf Coast states impacted by the 2010 BP oil spill.

Challenges
The goal of the campaign was to inspire meaningful conversation about the significant impact the oil spill had on Gulf Coast economics and local residents. The website was part of a national campaign that needed to achieve these three goals:

  • Sharing facts about the oil spill.
  • Encourage state residents to tell their stories about the spills’ impact on their regional economy and natural habitats.
  • Encourage local community and political involvement, that would gain attention from Washington D.C.
Approach
The NationBuilder community platform was chosen to develop the web presence. NationBuilder is a fully-integrated tool, that combines a website, database, email, social media marketing all in one that can help build supporters around a shared cause. My focus was the design, information architecture and user experience strategy. With four weeks to launch a working website, I partnered with a NationBuilder developer/consultant to lead development and integration.

Results
a. Homepage – designed with an interactive map highlighting the 5 key states impacted by the BP oil spill. Additional sections throughout the homepage provide users with clear points of entry, to learn about the oil spill devastation and environmental initiatives that are state specific.
b. Interior Page Template – the interior page template utilizes a two column layout that organizes supporting content on right and primary content on the left.
